Jeffrey Arthur Moynihan Jr. was arrested on Tuesday, November 19, in Bradenton, Florida, after impersonating billionaire Elon Musk and scamming a 74-year-old woman in Texas out of $250,000.

Moynihan reportedly contacted her via Facebook in 2023 and promised a financial return of $55 million if she transferred money to his account.

The crime was uncovered after Texas authorities identified that the woman had made a large transfer to Moynihan’s company, Jeff’s Painting and Pressure Washing LLC.

Detective Jim Curulla from Bradenton Police received the alert from Texas authorities. “The victim truly believed she had invested her money with Elon Musk. She felt that Elon was really her friend,” said a police spokesperson, according to the New York Post.

The victim’s husband reported that she was scammed for a total of $600,000. Police are still tracking the rest of the stolen money.
